Child Swimming

"Our children have so much fun in our lessons; it makes teaching not a job but a joy!
We get to see them progress over the years, from nervous newcomers right up to confident club level.
Seeing that progress makes me proud to be a part of it and Aquaswim."

Becky Nunn, Swim Teacher

New to water? Improve confidence? Get out of armbands? Or simply get that stroke perfect?
We have something for your child!

All our classes are progressive; teaching skills, technique and stamina in a fun and safe manner.
Our stages are as follows, please click on the class for further information:

Jellyfish Class - Parent & Child / 2-3 Year Olds / Water Confidence

Parent & Child - This class aims to introduce the child of 2 – 3 years old and their parent to the water in a safe and fun environment, through the use of toys, songs and games. These classes are primarily aimed at improving the water confidence of the children through the activities which in turn will help them on their first steps of learning to swim.

Starfish Class - 3-5 Year olds / Beginners - Developing

All starfish classes are aimed specifically at children from 3 - 5 years old. We have 3 different levels and they all take the learning through play approach to swimming lessons, with games and activities to encourage the children to move through the water, increasing confidence and skills as they move through each level. All of our starfish classes have a maximum of 6pupils in each class and for a full class will have a teacher and an assistant in the water with the pupils.

Starfish 1 - For total beginners and those children who have little or no experience in the water. Also aimed at children who may need extra parent support in the water, are nervous, or for their first time to swimming lessons.

Starfish 2 - For those who are confident in the water and / or have had swimming lessons before. Children need to be able to swim with aids (armbands, backpack, floats etc..) but without assistance, consistently for 10 metres or more. Be willing to put their face in the water and jump into the water to an adult. They should also be able to float on their back with aids unassisted.

Starfish 3 - For very confident under 5 year olds that can swim at least 5 metres unaided. They should be happy to put their face in the water while swimming and be able to jump in also unaided. Although they are not expected to be able to swim unaided on their backs they should however be able to float and be comfortable on their backs with aids.

Seahorse Class - 5+ Year Olds / Beginners - Developing

Beginners - All seahorse classes are aimed at children from 5 years old and upwards. These are slightly more structured classes but still include a lot of games and activities to encourage a fun element to learning to swim, helping to improve skills and water confidence as they progress through each of the 3 levels. All of our Seahorse classes will have a maximum of 6 pupils in each class and for a full class will have a teacher and an assistant in the water with the pupils.

Seahorse 1 - For total beginners and those children who have little or no experience in the water. Also aimed at children who may need extra adult support in the water, are nervous, or for their first time to swimming lessons.

Seahorse 2 - For those that are confident in the water and have had swimming lessons before. Swimmers should be able to try without aids for a couple of metres or be confident with reduced bouyancy in their swimming aids. (armbands, backpack, floats etc...) Pupils should be able to blow bubbles in the water.

Seahorse 3 - For very confident beginners who are able to swim at least 5 metres regularly on their front, and float unaided on their back. The child should be happy to submerge under the water and be able to swim some of the width with their face in the water. They should also be able to jump unaided into the pool.

Octopus Class - 5+ Years / Improver

Improvers - Again we have 3 levels and these are aimed at progressively improving the stroke and water skills of each
child. More time is now spent on stroke technique for all four strokes aiming to turn it from basic technique into good technique.

Octopus 1 - For children that can swim consistantly 10 metres on their front, mainly with their face in the water, and is able to swim a short distance on their backs. They should be able to perform a push and glide and star float on both their front and back.

Octopus 2 - For those able to swim 20 metres front crawl and 10 metres back stroke with good technique. They should be swimming all the time with their faces in the water when on their front and have covered the basics of breast stroke and butterfly.

Octopus 3 - For children that can swim 25 metres front crawl, 25 metres backstroke, and at least 10 metres breast stroke with good technique.

Sharks Class - 5+ Years / Advanced

Advanced -These classes are  aimed at improving and fine tuning technique. These classes will take place where possible over half and full lengths for most of each lesson, giving each swimmer a further distance to practise each
skill or stroke whilst also helping to develop stamina.

Pupils should be able to swim 50 metres front crawl, 50 metres back stroke, 25 metres breast stroke, and be competant at butterfly legs.

1-1 / 2-1 Class - Any Age / Any Ability

If you would prefer a more individual approach a 1-1 or 2-1 class may be just the thing.  These are with just your child
or  your child and a friend with a teacher. These classes can be more easily tailored to your child’s specific needs and
requirements whether they are a Beginner or Advanced swimmer.
